In this book we meet Jefferson Morgan, a reporter who had been working for 18 years at the Chicago Tribune. After the illness & then death of his young son Bridger, Morgan & his wife Claire decide to leave Chicago behind. They move back to Morgan's small hometown of Winchester, Wyoming & purchase the small newspaper business he had worked at as a boy!Running a business in a small town is never easy, but it seems like running the Bullet has its difficulties meeting it's weekly DEADLINE on time!
Then one day in comes an old convicted & dying man named Newly Gilmartin. Gilmartin had spent most of his life in prison for the murder of a young girl many years ago & was now asking Morgan to clear his name before he dies! ( with the looks of it, there seems to be little time left for Gilmartin)
Will Jefferson take on the challenge? After all..why would Gilmartin have confessed to a murder if he didn't do it? This may be the most important DEADLINE that Jefferson has to beat! Can he do it??
I REALLY enjoyed this Jefferson Morgan story and was happy that the next story The OBITUARY was also full of intrigue & mystery!

The Deadline edition by Ron Franscell Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Loved the book but the ending raced along wrapping up the mystery nicely but, to me, in a manner that was a bit confusing. Without giving it away, it was a who did what and why involving so many characters that, although it did make sense I had to stop occasionally to figure out how this or that person's actions affected the rush to jail a possibly innocent man and hide their complicity for years.
I loved this book and even if I wasn't from Wyoming I'd love it! I started reading and couldn't stop till I was finished. The descriptions were so vivid I felt I was there. I've felt the feelings, smelled the smells and seen the sights that Ron describes in this book. It was like a trip home. Although this is not a true crime novel, it is very well done and I look forward to more just like this. It's a very easy read and keeps your interest while providing entertainment. Good job Ron!
Just finished the novel, "Deadline." The book is well written, and Ron Franscell does a nice job of creating and keeping the suspense until the final pages. His characters are realistic, and he has created characters that are true to life in a small Wyoming town. Being from Wyoming, I can speak to the way he developed his character's personalities and there overall character. I would recommend this novel. I had trouble putting it down. Nice job, Ron.
When Deadline really does mean a deadline. Jefferson Morgan, is really that man that can be trusted to understand a tragic event, and get to the bottom of it. The setting and the plot I have to say is one of my favorites. The story line lets you into exactly the accomplishment and the scary attributes that do go into solving a story that was put on the back burner when no one could cover it. Ron Franscell is a admirable writer. He is trusted to bring you into his world for the setting of how things should be.
A small town newspaper publisher unravels the brutal murder of a young Indian girl while struggling to keep the local hometown weekly sheet he's just purchased from collapsing. The quirky cast of townspeople ground the book and add flavor as Jefferson Morgan pieces together the tragic story that clears the name of a crusty old man imprisoned for the crime 50 years earlier. Really enjoyed the writing style of this author, and his talent of being able to drop you into the thick of it. Dialog really rang true; almost felt like I was eavesdropping on people I'd known for awhile. Good mystery and very enjoyable read.
Chicago newspaper reporter Jeff Morgan leaves the big city behind to buy the weekly newspaper in his hometown, a premise that holds no hint of the wild, unpredictable journey author Ron Franscell has planned for his reader. Several subplots are deliciously intertwined and masterfully written by Franscell. The protagonist pours his heart into solving a mystery and fulfilling a request made by an ex-con who will succumb to terminal cancer at any time. In the process, old resentments, buried secrets and small-town power plays work to keep Jeff from seeing that justice is done. Just when the reader has identified "the bad guys," the story takes another direction, and Franscell proves again what a gripping story he has cobbled together. His writing lacks the commercialism of many authors; Franscell is head and shoulders above most.
Even though I usually read true crime, I really enjoyed this book.Ron has a unique knack for keeping you in suspense....
The characters come alive in this fantastic book....Jefferson and ClMorgan decided to move back to his home town after the death of their son "Bridger. " to try to get a fresh start..Jefferson never imagined that an old man, imprisoned for most of his life, would seek his help in exonerating his name for the crime of murder in 1946 of a little girl they called Aimee Little Spotted Horse.Jefferson didn't believe him at first but after checking out a few things that make him believe Neeley.Anyway I dont want to ruin the story for you.But it's an amazing story.I loved it.
