This book gives another outlook on whether a family should pull the plug on unconscious patients. How long should a patient be hooked up to life support? "Still Life" certainly gives another perspective about those who have suffered grave injuries and whether they can hear and see those around them.

In the case of the young woman, Casey Marshall, as she lays unconscious, she begins to hear what is going on around her and what she hears could tear apart her entire life should she ever return to the life she shares with family and friends.

This book is full of shocks and thrills. Highly recommend it.

Joy Fielding is one of my favorite writers - "Missing Pieces", "Kiss Mommy Goodbye", "The First Time" and "Whispers and Lies" are some of my favorite books. This book was a huge disappointment. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it but after just reading the first chapter I knew it was going to be a dud. It was boring and predictable. I did not enjoy some of her recent books, so I'm really hoping the next book is a lot better.
I love Joy Fielding's books. I was not disappointed with this novel. There was a lot of suspense in this story, but also some comedy relief. Being able to hear visitor's comments while lying in the hospital in a comatose state was a new approach to a plot. I learned to be careful what I say when visiting someone who is in a coma. This was a fast read and I enjoyed it.
Joy Fielding has built her career on what I refer to as "woman in peril" novels -- suspense yarns revolving around a mysterious threat to her life, with many suspects and a gradually escalating level of fear. (Other practitioners of this genre would include Mary Higgins Clark.)

There's nothing wrong with the genre, and Fielding, at her best, does better at it than many. And this book's premise alone -- the heroine, badly injured after being run over in what may -- or may not -- be an accident, lies in an apparent coma in the hospital, but awakes to find herself trapped, conscious, in a paralyzed body. The premise is one of the worst of all our nightmares come to life -- that of being buried alive -- which immediately catapults this novel into new territory. With her mind flitting between dreams, memories and the new reality and with her vision gone (she remains blind, able only to hear, but not see, move, or communicate in any way), Casey has trouble distinguishing reality.

And yet reality becomes a matter of life and death, as it becomes more clear to her that the accident wasn't an accident at all, and that she was intended to die. And that her murderer plans to finish the job, as she lies helpless and, as she fears, alone, unable to communicate with -- or trust -- her husband, friends or sister.

As Casey tries to find a way to save her own life, the plot takes a number of improbable twists and turns that strain the reader's credulity. The more you can stop yourself from saying "but that's not logical or terribly plausible" and allow yourself to be caught up in the suspense, the more you'll enjoy the second half of this book. The more the book moves back into the conventional territory of a 'woman in peril' novel, the more predictable it becomes; hence my rather lukewarm rating. It's still a good suspense yarn, but never really transcends the genre once past the original premise, which is strikingly original and reaches a new level of both horror and suspense. And while I don't want to throw out any spoilers here, the ultimate conclusion & resolution is simply too pat and warm and fuzzy to feel satisfying, even as the villain is too evil to be make the apparent personality transformation feel plausible. (Casey is shocked by the murderer's ability to deceive her for so long; a more plausible scenario would have been for Casey to realize that there were little signs along the way that all was not well once she realizes who wants her dead. Also too blatant is the manner in which Casey discovers her murderer's identity -- logical enough but a bit of a cop out, it is so blatant. No more on that, however, or I'll be into spoiler territory.)

This is a big improvement over Fielding's most recent books, and is a good, quick albeit predictable yarn. Not to be read by claustrophobics before going to bed, however...
Wonderful suspense amid a thrilling experience involving a reawakening of life. Fielding at her very best! A book you can not put down!!
This book centers on Casey, a wealthy, beautiful woman, who is grievously injured by a hit-and-run accident, leaving her in coma. She "wakes up" to realize that she is in a coma and can't see, move or communicate but can hear everything that goes on in the room around her. As the plot unfolds, Casey learns some things about her closest friends and relatives that come as a big surprise. In addition, she ultimately learns that her accident was not, in fact, an accident and starts to get a glimmer for who might have been responsible. The premise of this book is very unique and the way the plot unfolds is interesting and surprising. One of the stronger efforts of Joy Fielding.
Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't read "Coma Girls" by Stephanie Bond a while back. There's only so much time that a person wants to spend trapped inside the head of someone who can't really do anything at all.
Joy Fielding's Still Life is an extraordinarily creative piece of mystery writing that does not follow any conventional path. I refuse to spoil anything for a reader, so I'll say that I promise you will be hooked almost instantly, and you will not want to stop reading until the end. I truly could not put this book down until I read the last page, and then I saw that it was 350 am; I had started late the previous afternoon and only took time off to fix and eat a little supper. This is my first book by Joy Fielding, so I have much to look forward to. Treat yourself to her talent. I promise you will be very satisfied.
