I received this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Candlewick Press and LibraryThing for this opportunity. When I started reading this book, I immediately hated it. The characters are all jerks. I think if I met a single one of them in real life, the kindest reaction I would have would be a serious eye roll and getting as far away as possible.
Yeah, I know, I'm pretty judgmental.
But I kept reading the story. Just because I don't like the characters as people, doesn't mean they weren't really well written. They read off the page like a typical group of high schoolers. There is definitely some sexuality and some swearing, but it feels real and like it belongs.
Of Jenny and the Aliens is a story about a boy who is so in love with a girl that he would risk intergalactic war just to make her love him loyally. Reading that description, it might sound like there are a lot of epic battles or sci-fi scenes in this book, but there aren't. At the end of the day, this is a teen romance. These are average people, living an average life, with the small exception that there's about to be a war, and aliens have contacted earth. It's the story of a guy who falls in love with a girl who is "too good" for him, who doesn't understand him fully, and doesn't want to hurt him either.
This is a book about love, desperation, and growing up.
At the end of the day, it wasn't bad.
Do I think I would read this book again? No. Again, this is related to the fact that the characters were just horrible people. But Derek definitely changed and grew in himself throughout the book. It was well written, and I would read more from this author.

Of Jenny and the Aliens Ryan Gebhart Books Reviews
Derek is just your typical high school student. Trying to survive winter in Ohio, meet the girl of his dreams, settle into the 9-5 life living the American dream. Did I mention that we’re also in contact with aliens?
The book may seem a bit shallow to some, but the easy writing style made the book a quick and enjoyable read. The book keeps up a steady pace and I never felt bored along the way.
The characters of the book, especially Jenny, fall a bit flat. Derek is easily the most dynamic, but not the most interesting. Karl is my favorite character because even though we don’t get to see a lot of him, he’s philosophical and helps Derek understand how things can move forward, and that he can live without Jenny.
Overall the book was a good breather after finishing The Night Circus. Parts of the book had me outright laughing while Derek’s depression made me worry about how the book would finish. In the end, it hits a high note and finishes strongly.
I read this book in June of 2017 and it has taken me this long to write the review because I thought I’d DNF and try again, but after a second foray into this story…I just can’t. I made it a full 25% before I had to back away or risk throwing my .
Of Jenny and the Aliens is the worst parts of The Catcher in the Rye meets Bright Lights Big City. It’s full of crude and sometimes downright repulsive and exploitative depictions of women from the mind of a sexually frustrated teenage boy. Maybe it’s honest. Maybe it’s accurate, but as a female reader, I was more than a little creeped out by it. I understand angst. I understand finding people attractive but for the love of all that is holy, did it have to be worded in such a gross way?
But I kept going…at least for a while anyway.
First, let me say this I would not put this on a shelf for 13 year olds. Upper YA-if that. Between the language usage and fantasizing and the weird locker room talk objectification.
The story itself would have been interesting if the characters weren’t so unlikable…for the most part. Jenny is unique. She has depth and a past. There’s mystery and a genuine urge to solve the puzzle of her character, but it is quashed by the love interest. He’s stereotypical. Obsessive in an unhealthy and weird way. The plot is bizarre but intriguing. Except, you don’t know if it’s real or some random, hallucinogenic episode while the character was stoned out of his mind.
What I liked about this book was THE COVER. It’s what attracted me to the book. That, and the fact that it featured aliens. I was desperate for a new alien book, a little Jennifer Armentrout meets The X-Files, but sadly, this was more teenage male fantasy than sci-fi.
I was luckily enough to snag a digital copy of this book from Netgalley to review, and I tore through it like a bat out of hell! To preface, any time you say the word "aliens" I'm on board, no matter the context. So when I saw a YA title with a super cute cover that included aliens in the plot, I knew I had to request it!
Of Jenny and the Aliens is the story of Derek, a high school boy who has been through the ringer with his divorced parents and a forced cross-country move. While he's not completely miserable, he's never been truly happy...until he meets Jenny at a crazy end of the world party. You see, humans have finally made contact with aliens, and no one is sure what will happen next. This story follows Derek as he struggles with himself and to win Jenny over, and he has a few, well...unique, encounters along the way.
This book was SO different than what's out there right now. Yes it was boy meets girl, but it was so much more than that. It was a quick read, but one that sticks with you. What Derek did for Jenny I think will hit home with a lot of people, not just in the sense of how much you love someone, but the existentialism of how much is really out there, the meaning of life, all that jazz. I think this book had a lot of unobvious lessons in it, and I'm glad I was able to take so much away from it. I think Of Jenny and the Aliens will mean different things to different people, but it's up to you to read it and find out!Of Jenny and the Aliens will be released on August 1, 2017.
