I'm surprised to see I've never done a review on Amazon.com for this book; I thought I had. 'The Old English Rune Poem' is indispensable for serious students of the poem, and it's a darn shame it's been allowed to go out of print. Only Halsall has ever done the extensive study of the poem that she did, taking a year's sabbatical to examine the texts, the language, and to write copious notes on everything about the Poem.

Any study of the Old English Rune Poem should begin with this work. Halsall provides a detailed history of the poem, informed discussion of its probably date, cultural context, a facsimile of the only existing copy, a carefully-edited Old English text with modern English translation, and useful commentary on each verse. My only caveat is not to rely on the texts of the Norwegian and Icelandic Rune Poems in the Appendices (seek out R.I. Page's articles for an updated look at both).
I am interested in the development of the Germanic rune systems. This book provides the major study of these systems by an academic. I will be using this book for my continued research of all of the rune systems in northern Europe.
