The Girl With No Past A gripping psychological thriller eBook Kathryn Croft
This is a tricky one because I hate to give a negative review but I also base a lot of my choices on other people's reviews so here it goes. This is not a badly written book it just felt a little anticlimactic and I felt it was really difficult to plug into Leah's character. People have written this was similar to Gone Girl and Girl on a Train and I think that is completely misrepresented. Both those books really drew you in and connecting to the characters and their character flaws made them gripping. I just found this book a bit flat and the ending gave me no food for thought which the other books did. Sorry again to have to be so brutally honest but I hope this helps people make an informed decision.Product details

The Girl With No Past A gripping psychological thriller eBook Kathryn Croft Reviews
I wanted to like this book because I liked the last book I read by Kathryn Croft. However, it was very slow and boring and there was no reward at the end. There was not one character that I liked or respected at the end of the book. I found them all despicable. I'll try not to give too much away, but a spoiler or two is necessary for me to express why I disliked the book and the plot. Leah took part in what she thought was a lesser crime that turned into a horrific crime and she did nothing to try to stop it. A brutal rapist goes free because the victim doesn't want to have to relive the event by pressing charges. I'm sorry, but I think its her duty to stop this guy even though its uncomfortable. Refusing to press charges releases him into society and, given enough time, he would have done it again to other women. It isn't fair to all the other unsuspecting women out there to turn this guy loose in society, when a little help on her part would have put him in jail for life. Leah's friends were horrible people for having just stood by and watched the beating and the rape without doing anything. They continued to be best friends with the guy! Yes, Leah got them in the end, but the way she did it spoke volumes about her character as well. This was a very uncomfortable plot where most of the characters were really missing a moral compass. The ones that showed a bit more humanity were too weak and gutless. I'm ok with a flawed character, but these people were really disgusting individuals and I have no desire to read about any of them again. I wish I hadn't read about them. By the way, I bought the audible narration with the book purchase and I thought I'd die of boredom. The narrator used a weak, weary and lethargic voice throughout. I listened to the first 10 chapter and just couldn't do any more. I understand the plot was heavy, but show a little energy! I returned the audible, portion, but kept the book since I'd read it.
So many characters in this stunning story of intrigue. All have a deep secret from the past. Only in the ending do you get to find out about what really happened. I couldn’t put down this sinister yarn as every page explodes into yet another dark tragedy.
Many of the personalities reveal their own devious histories, which tends to make the book tricky and bewildering, and most difficult to fathom out what sad event erupted so long ago in the distant past.
The writer was exceedingly clever in painting her picture, so that the reader was encouraged to turn the pages and find out what happened. Many of the families were so typical of the modern era, parents cracking the whip, but failing to arouse enthusiasm by their offspring. Over qualified teenagers settling in humdrum jobs.
Beware, there is a lot of savagery and selfishness presented to the unsuspecting reader.
This author uses improper grammar, not just in what the characters say, which is fine, but in her narrative writing. It is not "try and go," but "try to go."
Ordinarily, I don't care for "gripping psychological thrillers," especially those written by women about women. Generally, there is too much emotion and not enough action for my taste.
Both those things said - the poor grammar and the nature of the book - I liked this book. Enough to buy and read another book by the same author - The Girl You Lost, A gripping psychological thriller - about which I would make exactly the same comments. Neither of these books are the best books I ever read, but they are good, and far, far from the worst I've ever read.
If you're looking for something distracting or to fill your time, I recommend both these books. Just don't expect them to be too deep.
I really struggled with this book. I loved the idea, I love a good mystery with plot twists, but the main character's constant second, third, fourth guessing herself was so annoying. I was surprised at the twists, and I stuck with it because I really wanted to know what happened to Leah in the past. But I loathed how insecure she was and how she kept talking about her best friend's weight. Why does that matter? What did that have to do with the story? At many points, and especially at the end, I wanted Leah to just get over it and quit acting like such a victim. Luckily it was a fast read.
I read this book on kindle because of the great reviews. It was very promising in the beginning but I was over 60% before the author finally explained the terrible thing Leah did and not until the end that we knew all of it. I felt that by the mid point it dragged on and I was losing interest. I did read it to the end, which fell flat for me. There were so many points in the early story that the girl Leah was would not have made the decisions she did. Her friends behavior didn't ring true either. I get that Adam had a hold on all of them but normal, otherwise good kids, don't go along to that degree. It started out with promise but the follow through wasn't there.
Sorry again to have to be so brutally honest but I hope this helps people make an informed decision.
